Ending Alzheimer’s: Go Purple!
June is Alzheimer’s awareness month–
Across the nation, millions of people are ‘going purple’ to #EndAlz, and Hampton Manor is right there with them!
As two of the three facilities in the Hampton Manor community are tailored specifically for ‘Memory Care’, Alzheimer’s awareness is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts. As the ‘Go Purple’ movement states, one of the first and most important steps in ending Alzheimers is awareness. Informing others of the signs/symptoms of Alzheimers and the importance of early detection can be key in helping our loved ones live longer, more prosperous lives. Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. The most common early signs and symptoms appear as memory issues that affect day-to-day activities, difficultly performing familiar tasks, and language dysfunction. Unfortunately, these symptoms are also frequently associated with the general aging process and often go undiagnosed until it is too late. One in three seniors will die with Alzheimer’s. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. And more than 5 million Americans are living with the disease today. The statistics are alarming, and yet the disease continues to go generally undiscussed. The ‘Go Purple’ movement is here to raise awareness and it needs our help. The most genuine way of spreading awareness is through telling your story, and sharing your experiences with the disease. As Hampton Manor aims to ‘Go Purple’ and educate our community, we encourage you to do the same by sharing your ‘why’! In addition to honoring June as ‘Alzheimer’s Awareness Month’, each September Hampton Manor participates in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s walk in Ocala Florida. This walk is one of more than 600 walks nationwide, and one of 22 in the state of Florida alone. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the largest Alzheimer’s fundraising event, providing millions of dollars for Alzheimer’s care, support, research, awareness, and advocacy. Alzheimer’s is a scary disease that affects millions of people in America, but nobody needs to go through it alone. Hampton Manor fosters a strong community of doctors, caregivers, advocates, and friends who can help you through this tough time. Additionally, resources and support groups are listed and available on the Alzheimer’s association website. Hampton Manor pledges to continue to be an ally of the Alzheimer’s Association, Walk to End Alzheimers, and Alzheimer’s awareness month by educating our community and caring for those who are affected by this horrific disease. This month we wear purple to #EndAlz, this fall we will Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and every day after we will be support these phenomenal organizations as they search for a cure. But… we cannot do it alone! We need your help ‘Wearing Purple’ and ask that, if you can, you share your why with the hashtags #EndAlz (& don’t forget to tag Hampton Manor and the Alzheimer’s Association) to raise awareness!
